Thursday MTB Ride Notes (last Thursday):
Overall the loop trail was easily passable, little to no snow. The snow is worst in the wooded spots, which seems strange because these are usually have the least snow. JC Park is in similar condition, quite passable. The main problem is the pedestrian pack-down (rhymes with Friday Night Smack-Down). It makes for a rougher ride, but it's not bad right now, because there is very little snow on the ground (except for 2 or 3 drifts on the Northern ridgeline of the loop trail).

As an aside, I'd like to say I'm impressed with the amount of pedestrian traffic that has passed over several quite cold days. The loop trail and JC Park are very popular and well used.

A loop trail bonus is the Southern cross (Lamson wood to cedar view trail, paralleling the 34 by-pass). Almost no difference from normal. Pristine and fast, negligible snow, excellent traction.
Southern Cross Hint -- if it's seriously cold, then just take the direction which gives you a tail wind; you'll stay quite warm and get 3 primo hills. Five stars.

Q: What is the cost of not having a bike light, or improper lighting?

A: $80.25

Local ordinances (est 1972) requires that bicycles to have a white light on the front and a red light or reflector on the back when out at night. Both must be visible at least from 300 feet.

And, The Man is enforcing the law. The Fairfield PD has felt pressure from above to follow through for the safety of riders and motorists alike. Quite frankly, I understand that the motivation is not common sense. Rather, the common denominator is money.

A cyclist can have any type of white head light; from a flash light that is duct taped to the handle-bars through a range of higher priced bike light systems. It is highly recommended for the rear, red tail-light to have one of the best and brightest - the Super Flash.

3 common road bike routes

Stockport - An out-and-back route of thirty miles from Fairfield town square. Fairly flat with rolling hills.

Lockridge Loop - thirty-four mile loop that one can ride in either direction. Fairly hilly and challenging. Or, one can bike south towards the wee town of Glasgow and turn around with only one hill: twenty-five miles.

Brighton Loop - A good challenge for an experienced cyclist.

Central Recreation District

The purpose of this blogspot is to serve bicyclists that are new to Fairfield, or cycling, as a user driven forum. Dare I use the "F" word that biking can be "Fun" when done in groups, large or small. After completing five RAGBRAI's - ego - I have realized how the mileage and time passes with ease while biking with others. Yes. Fun times indeed. It may be a rainy or windy day, but a joyful attitude towards such an endeavor eases any minor discomfort.

Observe the rules of the road, and use common sense. It has been my experience that a majority of vehicles driven in the area give plenty of leeway to cyclists. Pay that courtesy forward. And, for godsakes, wear a helmet.

The route links to your right, should be a useful tool. Longer distances "roadie routes," is a WIP (work in progress). Currently, it has southwestern routes plotted.

btw, this is avolunteer project. So, before you ask for a refund on the time spent here - relax. Add to the solution. Go on!

Alternative Transportation Masterplan

Working with the Fairfield City Planner, City Council, and a motivated committee of Fairfield citizens, the JCTC plans to facilitate development of a transportation masterplan which would create "spokes" from within the city out to the Loop Trail.

Additional plans call for linking the city's major recreational buildings and fields, as well as creating safe bicycle routes to schools. Community meetings will be held to receive public input.
